Another good Saturday morning.
I’m rather excited about this morning, Kieran was at my workshop last Sunday machining the last of the Humpty Dumpty Egg, our Hayling Island Scarecrow festival entry this year, he took all the components home to assemble, so this morning will be the first time I’ve seen it together, obviously seen it when Sam came and drew the plan full size at cut the ribs. I unlocked the hall and walked in and there it was in the corner….wow that’s big…..870mm high by 700mm diameter, it looked enormous…..never mind, the plans are drawn for the whole project so that’s it.
By 9am the hall is full of very busy people; I said the usual things and then suggested they cover the egg with paper mache this morning, and to paint the brick wall to if they have time. Also if they get a few spare moments may be they would like to turn at least one light pull each, but to as many different designs as possible.
Well they had great fun covering the egg, first few coats before the break, it dried by the end of the break so the second lot went on then, it was all finished and dry by the time I came to load my van at the end of the morning, looking at the “busy juniors” picture helpers John & Sue did well to manage this project today. The juniors also found time to paint the bricks on the wall; I was impressed with both the Egg and the Wall. I should say at this point that I couldn’t get any plastic aprons so Young Sarah cut some out of a roll of plastic….don’t buy it……make it…..
The light pull turning went very well, some good designs there….however it was pointed out to me that somebody had replaced the plastic one in the gents toilet with a wooden one……the plastic one was now on the table with the turned ones, so very seriously I told everybody during the break and asked the question….who was it that swapped the light pulls over…you could have heard a pin drop….I think I did a convincing job of acting very seriously….because now I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t have…..there was a short silent moment before cheeky young Amber turned, pointed and shouted “IT WAS GRAMPY” and everybody laughed….priceless, absolutely priceless…..you cant plan stuff like that.
Kieran got an acrylic blank last time we went over to see John Davis, and was delighted with the pen Dave helped him turn this morning, see picture.

Tom
came with his granddad this morning; he was visiting and asked to come along,
always a yes to those questions, first he turned a light pull and then coloured
in a Forest picture with acrylic paints, made a good job of it too.
Not sure who took the picture but one of the boys showed Tom how to use the camera, we hope to see him again next time he visits granddad.
Lots of help as usual clearing away, thank you again everybody…only just enough room in my van for that large rather fragile egg……and there goes another brilliant meeting.
3 years next month….were does the time go?
