Shawls are woven on a triangular frame.  This frame has nails in close proximity along the inside edge of the three sides.

Wool is then tied to a nail at the bottom left hand nail on the sloping frame, threaded around the bottom nail on the opposite sloping frame and then back to the next nail up on the left hand sloping frame.  In the picture white and black wool has been used to create a pattern.

Another length of wool is then threaded through a hole in a stick and then one end is tied to the left hand nail on the bottom frame.  The wool is then threaded under and over the horizontal stands of wool to weave the shawl.  This can be seen in the picture.

A close up of the weaving.
