August 2010 Page 2 - Wooden Towers

Back to Reports of previous meetings    Page 1 (Bud Vase)    Page 3 (Creating Ash bowl)

Three boys were given the task of building towers out of a square base, a smaller square for the top and thin strips of wood for the uprights and bracing.  The only fixing method allowed was a hot melt glue gun.  The results were most impressive, with the winning tower supporting a considerable load of bricks and a concrete block.

The following pictures show the three towers loaded with bricks and a concrete block.  The pictures show the maximum load each tower supported when the legs started to bend.
